How We Track Box Office
MovezBox pulls together several public sources into one consistent view of a film's theatrical performance. This page explains exactly where our numbers come from, how we reconcile them, and where the limits are — so you can judge the figures for yourself.
Our data sources
We combine three kinds of data. Day-wise India collections for current Indian releases come from publicly reported trade figures, refreshed through the day. Worldwide gross and budget for films — Hollywood and international titles in particular — come from The Movie Database (TMDB), which maintains reported revenue and budget for released films. Cast, crew, posters, runtimes and ratings also come from the TMDB API. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
India net vs worldwide gross
Indian box office is reported in net terms — collection after GST — because that is the figure the industry works with. International markets are reported in gross. A film's worldwide total therefore blends India net with overseas gross; we label each figure so it is never ambiguous which convention a number follows. How verdicts are calculated
A hit-or-flop verdict is about return on investment, not the size of the headline number. Where we have a trusted budget, we take the ratio of worldwide gross to budget and map it onto a scale — roughly: around break-even is Average, comfortably above cost is a Hit, two to three times cost is a Superhit, and well beyond that a Blockbuster; failing to recover cost is a Flop. Where the budget is not reliably known, we deliberately show a verdict only when collections clear high, unambiguous thresholds, and otherwise show none — we would rather show nothing than mislabel a film.
Currency and conversion
India figures are shown in Indian Rupees (₹ crore; 1 crore = 10 million). TMDB reports revenue and budget in US dollars, which we convert to rupee crore at an approximate reference rate. Because a verdict depends on the gross-to-budget ratio, it is unaffected by the exact exchange rate — only the displayed crore figure shifts slightly with the rate we use.
Updates and accuracy
Live-tracked films refresh on a short cycle, and the leaderboard, roundup and individual film pages all read from the same source so they stay in agreement. Early-day figures are provisional and firm up over the following day or two. India theatrical collections are not published by a single official authority, so all trackers estimate — we aim for the most widely accepted figure and correct numbers as final reports come in.
